The programme will recruit 16 learners who will spend twelve months completing a nationally recognised iTOO Learnership Short-Term Insurance NQF Level 5 qualification while gaining practical exposure inside a professional business environment. Rather than focusing only on classroom learning, participants will work alongside experienced teams, allowing them to understand how an insurance company operates from day to day.
This combination of accredited learning and workplace experience has become increasingly valuable in South Africa’s labour market, where employers often look for candidates who can demonstrate both technical knowledge and an understanding of professional workplace expectations.
Why the Insurance Industry Continues to Create Career Opportunities
Insurance is sometimes overlooked by young job seekers who naturally think of careers in banking, information technology or engineering. Yet the insurance sector remains one of the country’s largest professional industries, employing thousands of people in customer service, claims administration, underwriting, compliance, technology, legal services, fraud prevention and business operations.
Every insurance policy issued requires professionals who can communicate with customers, process information accurately, understand regulations and solve problems responsibly. Behind every successful insurance business are teams that manage documentation, maintain compliance standards and ensure customers receive efficient service.
The iTOO Learnership introduces participants to this environment, giving them practical insight into how these business functions work together while developing skills that remain valuable long after the programme ends.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of the strengths of structured learnerships is that they allow participants to experience situations that cannot easily be taught through textbooks alone.
During the programme, learners will interact with experienced professionals, learn how departments cooperate to meet customer needs and discover why accuracy, confidentiality and professionalism are essential in financial services.
Participants will also develop everyday workplace habits that employers consistently value, including managing deadlines, communicating effectively with colleagues, handling confidential information responsibly and maintaining high standards of customer service.
These practical experiences often become valuable examples during future job interviews because they demonstrate how applicants have applied their knowledge in genuine workplace settings.
What Participants Will Be Doing
The programme has been designed to expose learners to a range of operational responsibilities that support the daily activities of the business.
Learners will assist with processing allocated work, maintaining accurate information, supporting customers, responding to queries, following business procedures and contributing to service delivery standards expected within the organisation.
They will also gain exposure to company policies, regulatory requirements and professional business practices that govern South Africa’s insurance industry.
While every task contributes to operational efficiency, the broader objective is to help learners understand how quality service, teamwork and compliance support both customers and business performance.
Who Should Consider Applying?
The iTOO Learnership is particularly suitable for motivated young South Africans who enjoy organised work environments, communicating with people and solving problems carefully.
Applicants should be South African citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 who are currently unemployed and not engaged in post-Matric studies. Candidates must not have completed a previous learnership and should have passed Grade 12 with Mathematics.
The employer is also looking for applicants who have completed a post-school qualification in areas such as Cybersecurity, Digital Forensics, Law, Drone Operations or another recognised field of study. Individuals with incomplete tertiary qualifications may also qualify provided they satisfy the programme requirements.
Although previous work experience is not required, applicants should possess basic computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook, as these tools are commonly used in professional office environments.
More Than Just a Qualification
Completing the iTOO Learnership is not simply about obtaining an NQF Level 5 certificate. It is also an opportunity to develop professional confidence, workplace discipline and practical experience that employers regularly look for when recruiting entry-level talent.
Many graduates struggle because they have academic knowledge but limited exposure to professional workplaces. Learnerships help bridge that gap by allowing participants to apply their knowledge while receiving guidance from experienced colleagues.
Whether participants continue their careers within insurance or move into related industries such as banking, customer service, administration or financial services, the practical skills gained through structured workplace learning can strengthen future employment prospects.
